From his early years, watercolor has been one of Manansala’s preferred mediums, honing his skills in layering and blending colors to create images in either a realistic or a washed manner.

These two watercolor paintings belong to his countryside themes. But gone are his landscapes characterized by verdant foliage, clear skies, and sunlight. Instead, Manansala gave a black and white portrayal of farmers planting rice, evoking immense respect for their hard work and dedication. He skillfully employed black watercolor, adjusting the tone and value through water control and using a fine brush to add more details.
