The difference lies in the iconography, the attributes. All are depicted with croziers/ staffs and books. However, San Gregorio wears a papal tiara while San Agustin, San Nicolas, San Ambrosio, and San Patricio wear a bishop’s mitre. Often, San Agustin carries a model of a church on his left hand.

This standard–sized relleve image depicts San Gregorio as Santo Papa. As Pope. The image is obviously derived from an imported “estampa” (print) or “estampita” (holy card) of the period (early 19th century/early 1800s) from Europe. San Gregorio wears a papal tiara; he wears a long cappa over his tunic. The saint wears a Capuche (a hood) over his long cappa. He wears a crossed–over stole secured by a cincture over his tunic. A simple cross suspended from a cord hangs over his tunic, from under his capuce. This is what the Santo Papa in Roma looked like in the early 1800s, at least according to the artwork of that time. It would have also been interesting to see the original polychrome of this image.

In Roman Catholicism, San Gregorio Magno (Saint Gregory the Great) is one of the four “Doctors of the (Latin) Church,” the others being San Agustin de Hipona (Saint Augustine of Hippo), San Ambrosio de Milan (Saint Ambrose of Milan), and San Geronimo Ermitano (Saint Jerome the Hermit). They were erudite theologians from early Christianity who wrote fundamental, foundational treatises analyzing Christian theology and metaphysics, who are regarded as master scholars by the Roman Catholic Church.

San Gregorio Magno was a popular saint among the OFM Franciscans who established the original parishes of Laguna province. He was named as the patron saint of the parish in Majayjay/Majaijai town in 1571; the church was constructed from 1616–1649, destroyed, and rebuilt several times through the centuries; it is the biggest church in Laguna. From the early 17th century/early 1600s to the late 19th century/late 1800s, every important Laguna parish church had an image of San Gregorio Magno in its main retablo altar.","lot_group":"OBJET D' ARTS","lot_details_html":null,"alias":null,"hp":0,"bp":0.2016,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":0,"userBid":null,"isPaid":0,"userId":34,"lot_status":"UNSOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":0,"hammer_price":0,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":68508,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/209/242/lot/29.jpg","isFeatured":1},{"id":68951,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/209/242/lot/29a.JPG","isFeatured":0},{"id":68950,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/209/242/lot/29b.JPG","isFeatured":0}]},"increment":[220000,240000,260000,280000,300000,320000,340000,360000,380000,400000,450000,500000,550000,600000,650000,700000,750000,800000,900000,1000000,1100000,1200000,1300000,1400000,1500000,1600000,1700000,1800000,1900000,2000000,2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":28,"next":30,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
