First emerging in the ‘60s, Sabel was actually a real person, an unknown vagrant scavenging near Bencab’s area who draped herself in layers upon layers of plastic to protect herself from the elements. She became a haunting image for the years to come, half-woman and half–metaphor as she becomes the personification of poverty in the rapidly modernizing Manila. <br><br> However, like many metaphors, Sabel grew and synthesized over the decades. She took on a life of her own — her bedraggled hair turned windswept, her plastic clothes turned into fabric, and soon enough she became more than the vagrant on the streets of Manila. She became a hallmark of Bencab’s shifting art style as he would reinvent and rediscover her image at every important fixture of his art career. <br><br> This 1994 Sabel sheds the derelict appearance of the 1960s Sabel. Here, Bencab uses her to further illustrate the movement and lines caused by the shifting fabrics on her person. “Every time I make a transition into something new, I work on her,” he tells in an interview with the New York Times. “Now it’s almost become an abstract form, just an interpretation, a vague memory. This bag lady is almost a brand.” <br><br> Indeed, the Sabel paintings are, more than anything, a fixture in the oeuvre of the National Artist. She, like Bencab, is in constant transition, standing as a symbol of the artist’s exploration of meaning and movement.
