It was most likely commissioned by an intellectual, an “ilustrado,” well–versed in classical literature and architecture. The crest is a broken pediment centered by a niche containing a scrolled cartouche surmounted by a shell, flanked by a pair of atlas figures whose bodies morph to foliar forms which decorate the pediments. The case of the aparador is adorned on the two front sides by caryatids with Ionic capitals on their heads whose bodies morph to acanthus leaves and flowers set on pedestals embellished with rings, set on pilasters. The aparador is supported by four truncated baluster feet. Unusual but classical furniture design like this was usually the domain of that era’s top cabinetmakers and carvers: Isabelo Tampinco y Lacandola, Ah Tay, and others.

This aparador speaks of the taste of the Filipino “ilustrados,” that accomplished band of young men sent by their well–off families to Madre Espana and to all of Europe for their tertiary and post–graduate education during the second half of the nineteenth century. The ilustrados possessed a high level of “cultura general,” and were familiar with the Greek classics --- The Republic, The Nicomachean Ethics, The Histories, The Iliad, The Odyssey, Theogony, Oedipus the King, Medea, Lysistrata; the Greek authors --- Plato, Aristotle, Herodotus, Homer, Hesiod, Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Aristophanes; Dante Alighieri; Miguel de Cervantes; William Shakespeare; Voltaire (Francois–Marie Arouet), Jean– Jacques Rousseau, Denis Diderot and contemporary writers. They understood and could quote them in an instant. They knew the works of Spanish writers Juan Valera, Benito Perez, Emilia Pardo, and Leopoldo Alas. Miguel de Unamuno, Antonio Machado, Angel Ganivet were their contemporaries at the Madrid cafes.

The ilustrados also cultivated high taste in the arts --- classical, contemporary, avant–garde. They attended the various art salons of Europe; in Madrid, they observed the groundbreaking works of Sorolla, de Regoyos, and Camarlench; in Paris, they were charmed by the modernism of Edouard Manet and they were among the first to witness the birth of Impressionism with Renoir, Monet, Pissarro, and of Post–Impressionism with Cezanne and Seurat. They attended the symphony in Vienna and Leipzig, the opera in Milano, and the theater in London. When they finally returned home to Filipinas, they brought boatloads of art, books, furniture, decorations, rugs, china, silver, crystal and all sorts of souvenirs of their Continental sojourn. The cultivated Filipino–European mindset differentiated the ilustrado from the rest of the native populace. The ilustrado experience created a new, different, cerebral, liberal sort of individual who would proceed to change the history of Filipinas.

The ilustrados came from the ranks of well–off hacendero and comerciante families in Manila and the provinces. They were invariably Ateneo Municipal and Colegio de San Juan de Letran undergraduates who were swept by the fashionable, thrilling wave of going to Europe for their tertiary and post–graduate education. The Suez Canal in Egypt had been opened in 1869 considerably cutting down travel time between Barcelona, Espana and Manila, Filipinas; the risks of shipwrecks and piracy were diminished.

That distinguished group included Jacobo Zobel y Zangroniz, Trinidad Hermenegildo Pardo de Tavera y Gorricho, Pedro Alejandro Paterno y Devera Ignacio, Ariston Bautista y Lintingco, Felix Resurreccion– Hidalgo y Padilla, Jose Abreu y Salazar, Jose Maria Basa y San Agustin, Antonio Maria Regidor y Jurado, Eduardo de Lete, all of Manila; Gregorio Sancianco y Goson of Tambobong, Morong (Malabon, Rizal); Joaquin Gonzalez–de los Angeles y Lopez–Palomino, Mariano Ponce y Collantes, Maximo Viola y Sison, Marcelo H del Pilar y Gatmaitan, Teodoro Sandiko y Santa Ana, Pedro Serrano y Laktaw of Bulacan; Francisco Liongson y Tongio, Jose Alejandrino y Magdangal of Pampanga; Jose Rizal y Alonso of Laguna; Gregorio Aguilera y Solis, Lauro Dimayuga y Solis, Baldomero Roxas y Luz, Sixto Lopez y Castelo of Batangas; Juan Luna y Novicio, Antonio Luna y Novicio of Ilocos Norte; Julio Llorente y Aballe of Cebu; Graciano Lopez y Jaena of Iloilo; et al.","lot_group":"FURNITURE","lot_details_html":null,"alias":null,"hp":1600000,"bp":0.2016,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":1600000,"userBid":5930,"isPaid":0,"userId":34,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":24795,"reserve_price":0,"hammer_price":1922560,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":68513,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/209/242/lot/34.jpg","isFeatured":1},{"id":68938,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/209/242/lot/34a.JPG","isFeatured":0},{"id":68937,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/209/242/lot/34b.JPG","isFeatured":0},{"id":68936,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/209/242/lot/34c.JPG","isFeatured":0},{"id":68935,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/209/242/lot/34d.JPG","isFeatured":0}]},"increment":[900000,1000000,1100000,1200000,1300000,1400000,1500000,1600000,1700000,1800000,1900000,2000000,2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":33,"next":35,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
