Francisco, Humanist, Folklorist, Historian of the Brush, Clairvoyant, started long before the National Artist put pen to paper. Conducting library work and interviews with the locals and old folks almost always constituted his first step whenever he was to delve into Philippine history and tradition in his paintings. When he finally found sufficient information at hand, he would then go to the lakeside of Laguna de Bay, where he would lie languidly on the grass, taking his time as he mulled over his findings.
“Projects would have to wait while he indulged in such moments of thought-busy solitude,” Zafaralla continued. “The moment Botong wielded his paintbrush, the idea was generally complete in his mind, with minimal areas for positive change as the work progressed.”
Another preparatory step Botong takes regarding his mural painting is the creation of multiple small-scale studies and test pieces. His watercolor pieces are often thought of as his “studies,” and often, these works correspond to bigger, more finalized artworks, albeit some with subtle but significant changes here and there.
Here, Study of Maria Makiling seems to be a preparatory sketch for the aptly titled 1947 Maria Makiling. With the latter Maria Makiling painting measuring a massive 6 feet by 12 feet, Study of Maria Makiling features a smaller, simpler sketch of the titular Maria. Though inverted, Study of Maria Makiling features the diwata resting on a soft, mossy rock. Her long, flowing hair cascades down her back; her arm rests protectively around a gentle deer sitting beside her.
In Philippine mythology, Maria Makiling is the diwata or nature spirit of Mount Makiling in Laguna. Originally a loving and bountiful deity, Maria Makiling was said to have retreated from the mortal world following the betrayal of either her human lover or humanity’s greed itself. In Botong’s Study of Maria Makiling, he features Maria in her peaceful state, surrounded by her beloved nature, with this monochromatic medium still highlighting the artist’s sensitive portrayal and skillful composition.
