Instead of portraying his usual prophetic figure, Dalí presents the saint as a lean, fragmented individual with an irregular torso and limbs, holding a cross staff and a seashell, which are among the saint's essential signs in relation to the subject’s biblical role as the prophet who baptized Jesus Christ. The artist treats the subject’s body almost like abstracted wax—pressed, stretched, and with a slight impression of melting, which aligns with Surrealism.

The artist transforms the saint's physical form into something metaphysical. The figure’s gesture could also be read as a split, a form of connection between heaven and earth, further reflecting his role in the bible. The raised left arm lifts the cross, signifying divine authority, and the spread right arm holds a welcoming gesture—an invitation to get close to God through baptism.

Even though it was a Prueba de Artista (and a very rare one at that, considering the piece was one of the copies verified by the artist), the featured piece perfectly captured Dalí’s artistic vision. It portrayed Saint John the Baptist effectively as a mediator and the embodiment of spiritual change. Someone who operates between the material and spiritual. A fluid guide towards the salvation of God.

The same sculpture was also featured in Robert and Nicolas Descharnes' Dalí: Le dur et le mou – Sortilège et magie des formes: Sculptures & Objects, published by Eccart in 2003, with an English edition, Dalí: The Hard and the Soft – Spells for the Magic of Form: Sculptures & Objects, published in 2004. The French-language publication serves as a major catalogue raisonné of Dalí’s sculptures and objects, documenting, showcasing, and contextualizing his sculptural works.
