These compositions captured the warmth, vitality, and glow of Filipino life.

The initial wooden studies proved so compelling that Amorsolo expanded each motif into monumental, fullscale canvases.

Corporate winds scattered the collection across the globe. The large-scale masterworks were shipped across continents to Sweden, vanishing into private European collections, with only one remaining in the hands of a prominent Filipino family.

Of the wonderful studies, only one was left behind. Today, it is a rare witness to the historic \"Fire\" commission and Amorsolo’s post-war era.

This petite Fernando Amorsolo work is a color study for a larger painting, which was originally in the collection of the Philippine Match Company (Phimco Industries, Inc.), the pioneering match company and factory in the Philippines. It began operations in 1905, established by the Gsell Brothers from Zurich, Switzerland. It formally adopted its present name in 1914.

In 1926, the company's ownership shifted to the multinational Swedish Match Company, becoming the Philippine Match Company, LTD. Phimco still operates today, with its manufacturing plant located in Santa Ana, Manila.

Phimco is best known for its iconic Jose Rizal safety matches, featuring that ubiquitous portrait of the national hero reproduced in postcards and textbooks. Other company trademarks, like the \"Guitar\" and the \"Commando\" posporo, have also become fixtures of Filipino popular culture.

Amorsolo's Woman Cooking resonates with Phimco's identity and legacy as the pioneer of matchsticks production in the country, long before the entire archipelago had been supplied with sufficient electricity, and fire—its ignition made easy through the convenience of Phimco's matchsticks—was the main source of lighting and the primary provider of thermal energy.

Phimco matchsticks have become enduring symbols of the Filipino home, used in kitchens to light stoves; in rural areas to ignite wooden logs (panggatong); and to light candles and gaseras that once illuminated homes at night. Woman Cooking epitomizes that.
