Known for integrating the Filipino sensibility with a distinct European flair, Tres Marias situates a group of women, often in sets of three but not necessarily so, in the confines of their private rooms where they could be their authentic selves away from the public eye. <br> <br>This particular work belongs in the Tres Marias series. Echoing the soft, romantic style the series espoused, AguilarAlcuaz depicts a group of four women engrossed in their own conversation as they sat in the drawing room. Dressed in a mixture of East Asian-inspired dresses, Spanish gowns, and wide-sleeved Filipiniana, these women are noticeably lax, their postures relaxed, and their arms slouched across the sofa or behind their chairs. These elements suggest a sense of privacy where social expectations aren’t upheld. <br> <br>The feminine domain, especially that of bourgeois decadence, is explored in Aguilar Alcuaz’s Tres Marias. Often defined by their uptight upbringing and refined class, these women are portrayed in this series as they shed the social expectations placed upon them.
