Afterwards, he shifted to pure non-representational abstraction characterized by thin layers of metallic colors and brushwork resembling a surface raked by a fine-toothed comb, giving his piece an elegant and meditative quality.

Last Day of Summer, however, introduces us to another facet of Norberto Carating's oeuvre—a textured acrylic painting. This 1993 piece features chunks of acrylic applied to the artist's painting surface straight from the tube. Straight, curvy, and colorful, these acrylics resemble party streamers hurled into the air in celebration of a bright and joyful summer. But beneath these vivid bursts of color lie the artist's darker, somber hues, revealing the underlying sadness of reaching the end of something fun. Hence, with Last Day of Summer, Carating encourages reflection on the bittersweet nature of endings and change.
