Following the success of his first solo exhibition in 1966, recognition and opportunities rained down upon him. He continued learning and creating. In 1971 alone, he held two solo exhibitions: one of his jewelry at Galerie Bleue and the other at Solidaridad Galleries, featuring his hammerouts and welded steel forms. He also received four distinguished awards, including the Republic Cultural Heritage Award, the nation’s top art honor at the time. More importantly, it was also in this year that Castrillo was selected to represent the Philippines in the Paris Biennial, setting the stage for his international career. <br><br> Castrillo’s 1979 Graceful Charm was created at the tail end of his fortune-laden decade. It features a bust of a woman. There is an unknowingly feminine aura that surrounds her: may it be from her long, windswept hair, her delicate hand gesture, or the shy smile plastered on her face. Like most of his figurative works, this piece has smoother textures and edges, with every detail of her face painstakingly and gracefully delineated. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated his versatility by working in a wide variety of mediums: bronze, brass, stainless steel, chrome, plexiglass, glass, and scrap metal. He also used hammerouts, reliefs, assemblages, and bronze casting to create his dignified abstract masterworks, showcasing his ability to adapt and innovate. Furthermore, Castrillo is also adept at making jewelry, a skill he inherited from his father. <br><br> Still, brass remains Ed’s preferred medium; his brassworks boast immaculate craftsmanship. Compared with other metals, brass is considerably more challenging to work with due to its zinc content. While it is softer than bronze, excessive heat can cause zinc to fume, and excessive force can cause it to crack. <br><br> He was known for his, in the words of Alfredo Roces, “big and brassy” sculptures. Almost everywhere in Metro Manila, a Castrillo work is present, adorning both public and private spaces such as parks, museums, office and residential buildings, hotel premises, and school compounds. With his top-notch artistry and precision, he created several monuments in honor of our valiant heroes, historical events, and notable Filipino figures whose contributions and significance are immeasurable. <br><br> Eduardo Castrillo burst into the art scene in the late sixties. But just like how his monumental pieces have become part of the urban landscape, his name has been forever embedded in the history of Philippine art. Given his numerous contributions and accomplishments in the art field, Castrillo is often regarded as a prominent figure in revitalizing sculpture in the Philippines.
