Nº cat. 80-51, pp. 611.","write_up":"A Gift of Memory From Zobel's \"Las Orillas\" Series

Nature, particularly rivers, features prominently in the oeuvre of Fernando Zóbel. Even as early as the mid-1950s, his Harvard and Boston years saw that fascination bloom with the Charles River, albeit his works during that time focused more on the landscape than the changing waters themselves.

However, that fancy fully took flight starting in the 1960s amidst his Cuenca years, where the two decades following his establishment of Museo de Arte Abstracto Español saw a myriad of series surrounding the Júcar River, chief of which are his El Júcar and Las Orillas, spanning from the 1970s and the 1980s, respectively. This particular work at hand, dated 1980, belongs to the latter series.

Orilla XXV finds itself situated near the very beginning of the Las Orillas series, which spanned from 1979 to 1982, and just a few years off Zóbel’s longest painting period, which was noted to be the years between 1963 and 1975. By this time, the Júcar River had been a source of fascination for Zóbel for more than two decades, and it shows no signs of stopping. For the first decade of this fascination, he had incorporated landscapes into his own style, utilizing shadows, lights, and reflections to evoke an imaginary structure without outright creating a landscape itself.

By the 1980s, however, and with his last series, Las Orillas, Zóbel’s sole aim was to use color to capture in his work the flowing river. He had returned even more strongly to color; while his first decade depicting the Júcar River was left more to interpretation, with only a sliver of colors introduced to it in the shades of gray, ochre, and tan, among others, Las Orillas intends to be more faithful with its reinterpretations through its usage of hues. With the series title translating to River Banks, Zóbel supplements these paintings with an ample amount of browns, blues, and blacks as befits the shores of the mighty river.

Orilla XXV portrays the view of the flowing water in the gorge perfectly. He opts almost exclusively for color, all chromatic sensations with little drawing, framing, or outlining used. A shock of soft, baby blue is the only reprieve in a canvas full of tab, ochre, and black, a hint of the rushing water caught at the edge of a riverbank’s photograph.

Heraclitus, a Greek philosopher, once said, “No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it's not the same river and he's not the same man.” It is an adage that could apply to Zóbel and his multitude of river series. Like many great artists before him, he found himself enamored with multiple muses throughout his artistic career, with the Júcar River ranking amongst some of his most powerful. At multiple points in his life, he had tackled the vastness of the river and found himself inexplicably drawn to its myriad mysteries. The Júcar River never changes, but in many ways, metaphysically and literally, it does, and it is this magic that draws Zóbel and his viewers to his river series even decades later.
