Known for his ghostly figures draped in white bed sheets, Gabito’s figures seem to pop out of the canvas, with the bends and curves of the fabric on the figures impeccably created, so that they look as though photographs of a haunted origin.

“My mother has liked sewing since birth,” he said in Tagalog in an interview with Lala Singian-Serzo as published in Lifestyle INQ. “She had many sidelines – she sews swaddling clothes, curtains, anything that she can sell to add to our household budget. Sometimes I help with cutting the cloth or threading the needle. I enjoyed the feel of the fabric.”

This fascination with fabric is evident in this lot in hand. Entitled Shroud No. 18, Gabito portrays three figures, each covered in white sheets, in a mimicry of a funeral shroud. They loom over the viewer, with some even having their heads peering over the painted frame, giving the illusion of them reaching out from the beyond.

Gabito’s “Shroud” pieces have become a mainstay in his oeuvre. This iconography, as art critic Carlomar Arcangel Daoana writes in the artist’s 2025 exhibition notes, serves not just as a visual motif but as a vessel for introspection.

“The shroud — concealing as it does — amplifies the power of what remains unseen,” he continues. “By embracing subtlety and indirection, the artist reveals that concealment can often speak louder than overt expression. There is a poignancy in what is left unsaid, a resonance in the feelings that resist easy articulation.”

Through his masterful interplay of light and shadow, Gabito’s Shroud No. 18 is a subtly terrifying vision, an unreality of the afterlife that many find themselves fascinated with and frightened by in equal measures.
