It shows the saint in his conventional iconography: a bearded man in a green tunic with a cincture and yellow cape, holding the keys to Heaven on his left hand and a Bible on his right. He is framed in an oval surrounded by a pattern of acanthus leaves; the oval is painted green and the acanthus leaves in red. This small relleve was produced at around the same time in the eighteenth to the nineteenth century as the famous antique Bohol “urnas,” comparatively small, carved polychrome shrines for domestic use which corresponded to the Spanish and Latin American “altarcitos.” <br/><br/> Bohol island developed a religious aesthetic all its own. Although its artistic sense had much affinity with that of southern Cebu, it was still its own spirit. Visiting the island’s more popular churches --- Loon, Maribojoc, Dauis, Baclayon, Loboc, Alburquerque, Loay --- one forms quick impressions of simple, solid, island architecture (Spanish “mamposteria canteria”); “pagang” coral blocks; great hardwood beams; soaring ceilings; painstakingly carved altars, based on simultaneously europeanized and indigenized design lexicons; originally bright polychromes, now subdued; stubby antique religious statuary reflecting the original Boholano physique; native mindsets that adapted remarkably well to baroque, rococo, neoclassical design influences two hundred years ago; the contrasts between Spanish opulence and Boholano austerity, between tradition and modernity; residents in prayer; frugality and modesty; a pious, innocent, naïve sensibility. Alburquerque church is a marvelous heritage case in point although the main retablo and the two side altars are highly skillful reconstructions of originals long gone, and the elegant wall murals are recent, the whole church has a cohesive 19th–18th century aesthetic, and everything looks as if it has all been there forever. It is a heritage model worth following.<br/><br/> Saint Peter the Apostle was a simple fisherman named Simon from Galilee who had a brother named Andrew, and they were recruited by Jesus to join his ministry. Among the twelve apostles, Peter was outwardly the boldest, proudest, most audacious, most impulsive, most guileless, most act– before–you–think character. However, Peter was innately weak, and when the time of Jesus’ Passion finally came, he denied him three times before the rooster crowed, as foretold. Afterwards, Peter still made valiant attempts to defend Jesus but to no avail. Peter still abandoned him at the end, afraid like the others, except for John who stayed by Jesus throughout. When Jesus rose from the dead three days later, Peter and John were the first men to enter the tomb (they were preceded by a woman, Mary Magdalene). Despite Peter’s many human failings, Jesus designated him to be the Head of his Church on earth. The current Pope Leo XIV is the 267th successor of Saint Peter as the Vicar of Christ.
