It exemplifies hidden beauty beneath ordinary roads, houses, trees, and churches. <br/><br/> Painted in watercolor during his stay in Europe in 1974, Manansala produces numerous works of art, including watercolors and mural-sized compositions. That year, the artist exhibited tubiglays (watercolor) pieces he made while on the continent—including works from London and Brussels—at the Village Gallery at the Philippine Village Hotel. <br/><br/> This featured work captures a peaceful European village dominated by a tall church whose steeple rises dramatically above the surrounding houses. His art, despite its Western subject, still hints at his lifelong interest in simplifying forms and creating harmony through carefully balanced shapes and restrained color. <br/><br/> Despite the absence of human figures and the focus on the street and expansive gray sky, Manansala’s masterpiece conveys the emotional experience of encountering a tranquil European town. The still scene, almost suspended in time, encourages slow observation while reflecting his ability to produce lyrical landscapes that emphasize mood, spatial valence, and the expressive qualities of watercolors. <br/><br/> Together, Manansala creates a carefully balanced masterpiece that showcases his ability that extends well beyond the Filipino subjects for which he was celebrated.
