Veering straight into the real, his depiction of the Mother and Child leaves behind the spiritual connotation of the Madonna and her son in favor of the material condition, choosing instead to portray the secularity and mundanity of the Filipino family.

This particular Mother and Child piece carries Bencab’s distinct bright color scheme and bold brushstrokes, further cementing its Filipino identity. The mother carries her child up on her shoulders, her hands big enough to sufficiently support her son. The artist consciously depicts the pair’s close kinship, not just physically but emotionally.

Bencab’s Mother and Child situates what is often a divine subject matter into the secular. He creates an image uniquely and wholly Filipino through his usage of vivid colors and native elements, a testament to the artist’s penchant for depicting the workers, the peasants, and the marginalized in his oeuvre.
