The result is a magnificent abstract work that attests to his artistic brilliance during his prime decade of the 60s—a period defined by international awards, exhibitions, and prestige as he gained recognition in the global art scene.<br><br> Painted during his time in Europe, Zalameda had gone abroad around this time to further his studies, eventually studying at the Art League of California, Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Beaux-Arts, and the Sorbonne University in Paris. His international recognition brought his abstractions into the homes of private collectors worldwide, as well as into exhibitions that made his name more renowned in the scene during the 1960s.<br><br> According to an 1963 article from Women’s Magazine, Oscar Zalameda had solo exhibitions in several cities including but not limited to Paris, Hamburg, Montercarlo, Grenoble, Barcelona, Rome, New York, San Francisco, and Milan, as well as had won numerous international awards, among of which are the Prix des Critiques in Paris, Premio Internazionale della Pesca, the Concorso Extemporano di Pittura in in Italy, the Prix de Insel in Hamburg and the Art League of California Award. Each of these titles gave testament to the prestige of his art during the height of his career.<br><br> Built around interlocking planes of a cool palette, with a balanced arrangement of large blue blocks contrasted by passages of ochre, muted orange, black, and white, Zalameda demonstrates his use of color in this work. The cool blue palette, contrasted with warm ochre and orange, prevents the composition from becoming monotonous. This prompts one’s eye to travel throughout the painting.<br><br> The outline loosely defines the shapes without enclosing them, allowing the forms to almost blend and merge into the next, creating a sense of continuous movement and recalling formations of rocks, cliffs, boats, buildings, or water reflections without establishing any single explicit subject. It creates a tension between geometric structure and loose brushwork.<br><br> The masterpiece then hints at a trait that became defining in his oeuvre: abstraction can still evoke familiar places, emotions, or memories through careful arrangement of form and color.<br><br> Zalameda—through his masterpiece—offers a glimpse of his experimental phase, investigating how color, shape, texture, and spatial relationships could contribute without requiring a clearly identifiable subject.
