Through their demure nature, as exalted by their domestic life, Anita celebrates their grace and strength as she portrays their strong bodies and tight-knit communities.

Her pastoral sceneries take their inspiration from the rustic warriors of Zambales, where Anita spent her summers as a child. “The scenes of my childhood are so vivid in my mind,” Anita said, as recalled by Alfredo Roces in Anita Magsaysay-Ho: In Praise of Women. “The women pounding rice, going home to town in the dusk after the picnic, seeing the oil lamp-lit windows of the nipa houses. Had I never gone to Zambales, I do not think I would have the depth of impressions which I subconsciously draw from with such fondness and passion when I paint.”

In this 1990 piece, Anita depicts a group of four women in the greenhouse. Each of them is dressed comfortably with loose, plain shirts and hair pulled back to keep it out of the way as they tend to the potted plants. As befits an Anita woman, a small, gentle smile graces their faces, their heads bent towards each other’s directions as they conceivably engage in mindless chatter. Through them, the artist depicts her profound respect for the women’s quiet strength and dignity, choosing to highlight their simple, provincial life throughout her prolific art career.
