Depicting a man holding up his pet dog, this is a view that is grounded in everyday life. Borlongan revels in the mundanity of Filipino life, his figures channeling a deep personal and psychological tension that is fascinating in its simplicity. His paintings and, in Nik and Toyo’s case, his prints are “direct, drawing-driven, and emotionally charged,” as his artist bio at Gajah Gallery writes.

In 2020, four years before he created Nik and Toyo, Borlongan had returned to printmaking. He now runs Pasilyo Press, a printmaking studio in San Antonio, Zambales, which he co-founded with fellow artist and wife, Plet Bolipata.
