A Catholic himself, Ang’s impressive attunement to the zeitgeist of his time meant that he was well-entrenched in the cultural knowledge of the deeply Catholic Philippines. Like many Filipinos, he is intimately familiar with the visage of Christ, whether it be His body strung up on the cross or the various miracles He performed throughout His life. Of the various images in the artist’s stock, religious imagery, it seems, is his most powerful and best-developed.<br/><br/> Rosary Queen belongs in the same set of paintings with religious importance but attributes it to another religious figure: the Virgin Mary. For many devout Catholics, Mother Mary is a figure of reverence in and of herself, a holy figure that many have devoted their lives to. Her role as an intercessor is prominent in one of the most wellknown prayers in the Catholic Church: the Rosary.<br/><br/>Ang’s Rosary Queen brings a modernist Filipino twist to the Virgin Mary. He transforms Mary into his standard Cubist vernacular, stripping her down to her barest essentials and showering her in vivid colors. Depicting what seems to be a Marian sculpture, Ang’s Mary is clad in a rich golden cloth, with its hood creating a beautiful golden halo. Flowers decorate the foot of her sculpture, further cementing her veneration. With his interpretation of the Virgin Mary stepping out of the outright divine, he opens her to a myriad of interpretations, making her less mythical and more human.
