Combining a multitude of inspirations like pop culture, surrealism, and dadaism, among others, the worlds that live within his canvases are best described as bizarre or even grotesque — alongside iconographies of the current social milieu, Cordero superimposes blood, gore, and anatomical innards to reflect an eclectic blend of playful color scheme and horrifying subject matter.

Beneath all this kitsch, however, lies a particular mythos. More than for shock’s sake, Cordero’s works are imbued and informed by the sociopolitical and historical context in which the artist lives. By adopting a wide range of fields like street art, pop surrealism, and graphic design, Cordero inserts his exposés through absurdist moments injected within hyperpop, neon energy.

His 2017 Perpetual Deluge, Perpetual Guidance, exhibited at Under Heavy Manners, his second solo show at Jonathan LeVine Projects, tackles Cordero’s interpretation of environmental deterioration. Rendered in a style that blends surrealism and psychedelic art, this degeneration is made evident everywhere in the canvas: piles of material waste litter the body of water, and in the middle of the canvas is a horribly mutated person, barely even recognizable as one except for the sloughing of its greenish skin and the multiple orifices it has for eyes and mouth.

Perpetual Deluge, Perpetual Guidance, like many of the works exhibited at Under Heavy Manners, evokes a timely message. The Philippines is a nation of a complex blend between Eastern and Western influences, all superimposed with an air of uncertainty and an increased susceptibility to violence, both to one’s personhood and their environment. It is in this particular juncture of Philippine history that this work was conceptualized, and Cordero’s unsettling imagery emphasizes that vulnerability that blankets Philippine society.

“In this new body of work, brutalized and defeated subjects from Filipino folklore and mythology are juxtaposed with cubist shapes and imagery appropriated from kitsch, the occult, gore-fest films, and Futurism,” says the press release of Under Heavy Manners. “By producing his own unique mash-ups, Cordero creates surreal compositions of gruesome environments overflowing with contrasting influences, reflecting the diversity of the Philippines and the bloodshed experienced by its citizens.”

In its surrealist style, Perpetual Deluge, Perpetual Guidance poses a hypothetical situation: as humankind continues to abuse our living world, the deterioration of our own humanity comes with it. Alice Guillermo had once described Cordero’s art as “corrosive candy pop” — indeed, Perpetual Deluge, Perpetual Guidance perfectly embodies that corrosiveness. Through his hodgepodge of inspirations, Cordero manages to create an iconography that is entirely his own: a cross between fantasy and memory, a combination of primitivism and formalism, that is unafraid to present uncomfortable answers to his discomforting questions.
