At the same time, their hand resembles a hand symbol for blessing in a religious context, subverting its meaning to “horns”, turning the sacred house into association with mockery, reference, or even evil. This gesture immediately strips it of its original context and amplifies the existing context on the canvas, forcing viewers to confront the violence and prejudice it represents.<br/><br/>The white horse itself—which symbolizes divine guidance or victory—rides wildly on the dark field. Yet, its rider reveals a naked foot immediately stripped bare of the subject’s invulnerability. A fitting detail that calls to mind Ocampo's practice, where symbols of authority are both elevated and ridiculed. The apocalyptic background supports the idea that violence, colonialism, and religious fanaticism continue to haunt contemporary societies.<br/><br/> On the right is an image of a burning sacred heart decorated with several religious icons such as Christ’s crown of thorns and a palm leaf, and is stabbed with a silver dagger. The placement of the emblem with such dark imagery immediately pins the iconography between reverence and desecration. The German title—which roughly translates to ‘O Christ, Interceding with God the Father ’—immediately reinforces the religious imagery. By containing the sacred imagery within the pointed, burning city and other grotesque and fragmented details, Ocampo takes the image associated with Christ's divine intercession and turns it into something unsettling and contradictory. Overall, Ocampo’s masterpiece presents a chaotic visual language where symbols of religion, racism, colonial history, authority, and violence collide.
