Aquino began to develop her artistic talents in 1996, four years after she stepped down as the president of the Philippines. Filipino artist Jeffrey Consumo mentored Aquino at the Sumulong-Cojuangco residence in Dasmariñas Village in Makati City, where her art classes would be held every Wednesday from 3 PM to 5 PM. This fruitful relationship would go on until 1998. By 1999, Aquino would once in a while invite Consumo to her Times Street residence in Quezon City for one-on-one art lessons.

Consumo remembers the late former president as a quick learner. In an interview with Rappler in 2018, Consumo vividly recalls his teaching experience with Aquino: “Ang ginawa ko, gina-guide ko. Ito yung canvas. Ito yung pintura. Ito yung brush. Idraw-drawing ko ng brush, pinapakita ko yung gagawin. Tapos, mag-paint over na siya.” (What I would do is I would guide her. This is the canvas. This is the paint. This is the brush. This is what you do. I’d draw with a brush and show her what to do. Then she would paint over it.)

Even if Consumo and Aquino attempted to paint other subjects, the latter had a penchant for painting flowers, which Aquino would constantly depict in her art. Aquino’s art inclined towards Expressionism, as evident in her use of bold colors and larger-than-life figures. Consumo said that Aquino produced almost 300 paintings since 1996. Acrylic and oil, both on paper and canvas, were her preferred media. According to Consumo, Aquino was not very fond of using watercolor since she always wanted to “feel the paint.”

Corazon Aquino is not just an icon of Philippine democracy. She was an artist whose talent and passion for the arts flowed through her veins genuinely. Her paintings serve as mirrors to the vicissitudes of her life – tumultuous yet dramatic and colorful.","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":null,"alias":null,"hp":500000,"bp":0.168,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":500000,"userBid":9290,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":null,"hammer_price":584000,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":18896,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/21/39/lot/1018.jpg","isFeatured":1}]},"increment":[450000,500000,550000,600000,650000,700000,750000,800000,900000,1000000,1100000,1200000,1300000,1400000,1500000,1600000,1700000,1800000,1900000,2000000,2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":1017,"next":1019,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
