With his subtle approach, he plays with negative spaces, alluding to what isn’t there just as much as what is. Reflection, light, and shadow mark dimensions and perspective, and with the slightest brushstrokes, Zóbel creates an entirely new world, metaphorical and lyrical in its abstraction. \n\nThese two watercolor pieces portray Zóbel as both analytical and intuitive; he filters his spontaneity and wields it so precisely as to make a distinction with every stroke he uses. His paintings become looser and freer, becoming more daring as they push the limits of what minimalism and abstraction could be.
