Reflecting his interest in portraying ordinary Filipino people and everyday characters and turning them into figures with individuality and dignity, Dalena captures both his sitter’s distinctive physical features and expressive character. The vigorous, repeated strokes that create thread-like marks give the image a textile-like quality, akin to a woven image—offering an experimental expression of the sitter’s character while keeping the piece energetic despite the subject’s relatively still pose.
