His 1983 Maggagalapong is the perfect example of his folk art. Here, he depicts the titular maggagalapong, or the person who grinds rice to make the flour used in many native delicacies. The woman sits beside her grinding machine, carefully shoveling spoonfuls of rice into it until it becomes a fine powder. Around her are traces of a simple, provincial living: the quaint nipa hut, the cracked coconut, and the bundle of banana heart hanging on a pillar, among others. Throughout the years, Demetrio’s art remains a testament to his enduring dedication to Philippine visual culture and his fascination with the pastoral and the provincial.
