He also explored a variety of media, including acrylic, oil, pastel, watercolor, graphite and charcoal, and pen and ink. From bold sweeps to fine lines, Joya created each of his works with utter\nknowledge and consideration of every stroke, color, space, and form.

\nAfternoon before a Storm, painted in 1974, coincides with the decade he introduced his acrylic collages—a unique blend of translucent, finely grained rice paper and acrylic paint. This oil painting could represent the saying “calm before the storm,” showing an abstract, serene landscape bathed in calming blues, oblivious to the\nbrewing storm that waits for the perfect moment to strike.
