Every once in a while, he goes back to pastel drawing, practicing facial expressions and creating anatomical studies. Nothing too detailed and fancy, but highlights his deft artistry.

In his 1976 Old Woman, Joya expertly illustrates an elderly woman with a faraway gaze. Despite being depicted alone, with no one or anything around, her posture and body language suggest she’s sitting by a window, her arms propped on the windowsill and her eyes directed outward as she watches what is happening there. Moreover, Joya was able to capture the hunch in her back, along with sagging arms and fingers brought on by her old age.
