At any time of day, these vendors roam the barrios to sell, sometimes on horseback, in cow–or carabao–pulled caravans, riding a motorcycle, or on foot. <br>\nEver the proud Filipino that he is, Hugo Yonzon Jr. always makes these customs and traditions present in his canvases, as in this 1982 oil painting. Here, Yonzon paints a male vendor with two kids, all of them crouched\non the pavement as he carefully places a yellow bird in a bamboo cage—presumably bought by the children. This piece exhibits the artist’s cubistic folds and skilled brushwork, as well as his trademark vibrant yet hushed\npalette.
