Kintsugi is a Japanese art form in which mistakes are treated as part of an object’s history, not something to be disguised. Mainly used in pottery, the artist painstakingly puts the broken pieces of a ceramic bowl back together, sealing the cracks with gold-dusted resin or lacquer. The result is a piece of pottery that is not only fully functional but transformative, as it carries proudly within its seams, literally, the wear and tear of time.

Hablo’s Kintsugi 82 features the iconic golden streak that comes from kintsugi pottery. Like kintsugi artists, he alludes to the art form not just as pottery formation but as an extended metaphor — he invites us to view our brokenness not as something to fear or hide but as an opportunity to create something beautiful and tell stories of resilience and growth.
