With coarse brushwork reminiscent of graffiti paint, Ocampo creates a surreal image: three slug-human hybrids with an Earth for a head slither across the canvas. They each carry a cross over their shoulders. This bizarre picture is loaded with symbolism, from religious to political to historical, and each interpretation is just as valid as the last. This is perhaps Ocampo’s best quality: his works fuse a multitude of references, creating an oeuvre that shocks its viewers and provokes the preconceptions of viewers.
