Built from layers of pale blues, white, gray, and subtle yet present traces of ochre, orange, and black, Padua curated the field in a way that the painted surface, drawn lines, geometric forms, printed fragments, and textured surfaces overlapped with one another. The thick application of paint creates an uneven, almost sculptural texture, while scribbles, geometric drawings, and fragments of text and images subtly reveal themselves beneath the paint, creating the impression of something being built up, erased, and reconstructed—all at the same time. Such technique of layering relates to Padua’s broader practice of combining figurative and abstract elements. It incorporates trompe-l’œil and layering to create masterpieces that conceal and reveal different surfaces at the same time.
