Tabuena would make Mexico his home for good in 1955; and it was in Mexico where he ultimately developed his now recognizable Oriental style.

This pair of paintings both have a Christmas theme with motifs familiar to Filipinos: Parol and poinsettias. The first is a child dressed in the traditional Mexican dress of a tiered skirt and a wide-brimmed hat, carrying a traditional star-shaped lantern. The second is a portrait of a Madonna and Child, the mother enveloped is in a typical serape. Flowering poinsettias make this clearly a December vignette. One is more distinctly cubist than the other; but each are saturated with the lively colors of a Mexican sunrise.
