He\nproduces not only stunning land and seascape works, but also depicts\nthe activities of the rural folk, from tending livestock and catching fish to\ngoing to the market with picturesque backgrounds. Galicano utilizes\nthe effects of light and shade as well as the power of color in achieving\natmosphere, exploring its various possibilities on the canvas. In this\nparticular piece, Galicano draws our attention to one of Manila’s most\nrecognizable landmarks, Binondo Church. An integral part of Manila’s\ncultural and architectural history, the church was constructed and built by the Dominicans 1596. The current\nstructure we see today was completed in 1852 and features an\noctagonal pagoda-like bell tower which suggests the Chinese\nculture of the parishioners. The church was burned during the\nBritish invasion\nof 1762. Another one was quickly built following the occupation.\nImprovements were made in the 18th century but the edifice was\nagain destroyed in the 1863 earthquake. Galicano’s seemingly\ntakes us back in time and depicts the church without its current\nsurroundings. The towering establishments and roads of the\nsurrounding Binondo area are replaced by a much more idyllic\nsetting, effectively lending the viewer a glimpse of the past.
