Prior to this, he worked\nfor two years as a draftsman at the United States\nInformation Service (USIS). However, his early works\ndid not resonate with his chosen field at that time.\nInstead, his works during this period exemplify his\nmastery of linear refinement, resulting in pieces\nthat exude a dynamic and spontaneous control of\nthe entire composition.
\nThe leading art critics of that time took notice of\nand remarked on the early works of BenCab. Alfredo\nR. Roces commented: “BenCab displays a strong\ncommand of patterns, breaking up such subjects as\nsampayan and barong-barong views into patches of\nlight and dark, advancing and retreating spaces.” Eric\nTorres spoke of BenCab’s influence, noting that the\nartist’s works during this early period are “strongly\nreminiscent of Juvenal Sansó’s drawings and etchings\nof similar subjects.” This was an allusion to Sansó’s\n‘poetic surrealism’ where color augmented the aura\nof the composition. Similar to Sansó’s, the subjects of\nBencab’s early works were rendered directly from his\ncreative imagination.
\nThe exceptionally evocative quality of BenCab’s early\nworks aptly fit the theme of the Filipinos’ identity and\ncircumstances that serve as inspirations for his moving\nart, and this would constantly pervade the inner psyche\nof his art.","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":"
