As evidenced by his nude works, the\nartist had a deep appreciation for the human\nbody, delightfully reveling in painting such\na theme. As Sylvia Amorsolo-Lazo writes in\nAmorsolo: Love and Passion, “revelatory are\nhis splendid classical drawings of the Spanish\nwoman, which, were the nationality of the\nartist not known, could have been drawn by\na European artist.”
\nThe name “Laurita” has been conferred\nenduring fame as the Spanish woman who\nserved as Amorsolo’s model in his nude\nworks. Rare are Amorsolo’s nude paintings\nfor the celebrated artist painted only a few\nof this art form. Amorsolo’s nude women are\noften in seclusion, living their solitary lives, as\nexemplified by this remarkable painting. The\nfemale body in its bare state becomes the\nbeau idéal for understanding the intricacies\nof the human form. Amorsolo also exhibits\nhis characteristic as a “true Filipino\ngentleman-painter.” The woman gazes from\nafar, confidently flaunting her posterior,\naverting her eyes, and turning her back\nfrom the viewer. Even in the privacy and\nthe intimate act of caressing one’s self,\nAmorsolo’s nude still convey an inherently\nalluring yet dignified modesty.
