Instead\nof producing highly figurative and recognizable\nsubjects, Castrillo worked on metal to complement the\ndynamism of the characters and events he depicted.\nCastrillo had a penchant for metal as a medium,\nespecially brass, bronze, and steel. With\nthe assistance of his apprentices, he created sculptures\nthrough hammering, cutting, and welding. Aside from\nhis colossal monuments, among the widely popular\n\nand highly acclaimed works by Castrillo are his free-\nstanding abstract sculptures that are smaller in size\n\nyet still retaining the imposing character of a Castrillo\nsculpture.<br /><br />\nCastrillo was also known as a nationalistic artist who\ncommitted his art in the service of his countrymen. In\na 1970s interview by the Associated Press, Castrillo\nexpounded on his nationalist fervor: “Whenever I am\ndoing a big commission, or big artwork, particularly\nin the Philippines, I put myself, I put my artistry aside,\nand I deal more, and I feel more as a social being – a\nsocial being that has a responsibility of educating or\norienting a great number of people.
