Luz has noted\nthat his inspiration for this series came from his own\nexperiences with local fairs he’d often visit during his\nchildhood. A synthesis of both Luz’s earlier works that\nheavily features figurative elements and his latter\npieces that prioritized abstraction above all. In this\npiece titled Four Acrobats, one can easily identify the\nfour titular acrobats despite Luz’s unique abstract\ntreatment. This effect can be attributed to Luz’s\nmastery of both his own visual language and the very\nvernacular individuals often employ when\nperceiving. This effect is not only isolated to the\ncharacters themselves, but also includes the\nattributes and treatment of the work. A heightened\nsense of dynamic movement can be subtly deduced\nfrom the positioning of Luz’s figures, giving the feeling\nthat they really are leaping and tumbling across the\nair. While Luz’s choice of color is meticulously directed,\neffectively guiding viewers to engage with his work in\na distinctly coordinated method.

\nLuz has produced art pieces through a disciplined\neconomy of means and materials that perfectly\nencapsulates a uniquely Asian and Filipino modernist\nspirit. Although many of Luz’s works include only\nthe essential elements of lines, curves, and a few\nmuted colors, the Filipino people continue to show\nenthusiasm, admiration, and curiosity for them.\nLuz won the distinction of being designated National\nArtist of the Philippines, the highest artistic honor\nin the country, for Visual Arts in 1997.","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":"
Arturo Luz (1926 - 2021)
Four Acrobats from the
Celebration Series
signed and dated 1991 (verso)
acrylic on handmade paper
48\" x 80\" (122 cm x 203 cm)
","alias":null,"hp":6000000,"bp":0.168,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":6000000,"userBid":5926,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":null,"hammer_price":7008000,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":20234,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/24/43/lot/137.jpg","isFeatured":1}]},"increment":[5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":136,"next":138,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
