While a handful of mid-century Filipino\nartists demonstrated a precise understanding of the\ntenets and implications of European rooted cubism\nand American rooted abstraction, other painters\nlike Zalameda were more gingerly in their approach,\nborrowing the surface aspects of cubism yet never\ndeparting from the naturalistic basis of their art.\nZalameda seems to teach the viewers that abstraction\nneed not be hard to read, and need not be willfully\nambiguous. As always, Zalameda’s abstraction reveals\na style that has not completely given up imagery. The\nlines and forms that characterize his landscapes are\nstill evident in his later works.
\nThis influence would be traced to a fruitful stay in\nMexico during the late 1950s. “I’m basically an intense\nperson, a lover of life and people,” the artist declared in\n1978. Zalameda is best known for the style that would\nbe his signature: the looser cubist forms accompanied\nby the bold and assured colors. Strategic areas of\nwarmer colors accent the serenely dynamic visual\nexperience. It has been said that Zalameda left a body\nof work that he numbers at around 1,000 pieces, with\nthe artist turning out no more than 50 works a year.","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":"
