From fairies to gods, and heroes to\nanimals, Tapaya draws from the long and rich history\nof our pre-colonial past in order to stunning oeuvres.\nIn the work at hand, he illustrates the Greek myth\nof the nymph Echo — who would distract Zeus’ wife\nHera with long conversations in order to prevent her\ndiscovery of his infidelities. Hera, here portrayed as\na rather desperate housewife in a printed pinafore,\npunishes her with the curse of being unable to talk\nexcept for repeating the last few words she would\nhear. Tapaya paints her amusingly as an echo of\nherself, a loudmouth bursting from a dotted open\nmouth. A wolf and a bird seem to be eavesdropping\non the drama.

\nYet, Tapaya’s works are more than just a celebration\nand revival of an often forgotten part of culture.\nThey are original and unique in their own right,\neffectively creating a novel mythos that connects our\nstoried past with our present condition. Through his\nadept manipulation of folk aesthetic and material,\nTapaya provides his mythical characters with\nallegorical significance that transcend common\nperception, offering fresh insights about their origins\nand relevance. The paintings become a tableau of\nthe painter’s articulations and traces of the stories\nthat inspired them.

\nTapaya remains a favorite among Southeast\nAsian artists, collectors and critics. The far-reaching\nappreciation of his works has been part of the\nwave that gained more attention for Southeast\nAsian contemporary art in recent years He is\nwidely exhibited in cities in the Southeast Asian\nregion as well as in Beijing, Berlin, New York,\nand Tokyo.","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":"
Rodel Tapaya (b. 1980)
Origin of Echo
signed and dated 2008 (lower left)
acrylic on canvas
76\" x 60\" (193 cm x 152 cm)
","alias":null,"hp":3000000,"bp":0.168,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":3000000,"userBid":5926,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":null,"hammer_price":3504000,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":20239,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/24/43/lot/140.jpg","isFeatured":1}]},"increment":[2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":139,"next":141,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
