Milan.\n2019. pp. 48 - 49.","write_up":"Ronson Culibrina has been known for his playful\ninterpretations of history, the Filipino diaspora, or art\nhistorical figures that he remixes into contemporary\npop imagery. Culibrina invested in reimagining the\nwaterside communities depicting the ecological\nchanges confronting such locales and how they wrestle\nwith the challenges brought by the rapid urbanization\nand development. It depicted the equivocation of\nobjects forming rainbow-like patterns on the water,\nsimilar to an oil spill. On appropriating an object from\nthe fishing community’s material culture, the artist\nplaced nets to fill the voids in the composition and add\ntextural qualities to its empty spaces.<br /><br />\nThese backdrops of waving grids may suggest the\ntrap that humanity has yielded to in its quest to\npursue progress and development at the expense of\nnature. A sense of optimism still could be seen where\nit may rest in the colorful sheen through which the\nrealism of the figurations is filtered - reminiscent of a\nrainbow, a glimmer of hope casted.
