Most notably, Legaspi refined the core tenets of cubism\nin order to more aptly fit within the unique visual language of\nFilipino art. By doing so, not only does Legaspi pay homage to\nCubism’s storied roots, but he also managed to create a distinct\ntechnique that has undoubtedly paved the way for a number of\nlocal artists, collectors, and enthusiasts.

\nThis particular 1989 oil on canvas piece is emblematic of Legaspi’s\nvisual style and aesthetic. Rendered in an array of warm hues and\npopulated by meticulously executed white highlights, Legaspi’s\nwork presents us with two figures. The first figure features a\ndistinctly familiar element; the nude. The figure is splayed atop\nof what appears to be a bed or cushion of some sort. They’re\noutstretched position communicates a sense of comfort and\nvulnerability, implying that the figure is willingly attuned to\ntheir surroundings. The secondary figure on the other hand is\nseemingly enraptured by their current situation. Their pose and\nbody language suggests that it is intently observing the central\nfigure in a way that it implies a sense of intimacy or, at the very\nleast, respect. Yet the most striking feature of the work is how\nLegaspi’s distinctly cubist style manages to impart Legaspi’s\nmessage in a way that can be discerned from analysis but from\nexperience. The dominant red and earth colors of the work wraps\nLegaspi’s figures in an aura of intimacy that implies both a sense\nof complexity and intuition.","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":"
Cesar Legaspi (1917 - 1994)
Incantation
signed and dated 1989 (lower right)
oil on canvas
36\" x 60\" (91 cm x 152 cm)
","alias":null,"hp":7500000,"bp":0.168,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":7500000,"userBid":5926,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":null,"hammer_price":8760000,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":20146,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/24/43/lot/54.jpg","isFeatured":1}]},"increment":[5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":53,"next":55,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
