Zalameda left\nthe Philippines in 1953 to pursue further art studies\nabroad. In 1955, Zalameda finished studying mural\ntechniques in Mexico and began his professional\ncareer as an artist. Stirred by the Hispanic allure\nof Mexico, as well as its charming countryside,\nZalameda produced numerous paintings portraying\nvarious sceneries of the country he considered as\nhis second home.

\nBy the mid 1950s up to the beginning of the 1960s,\nZalameda’s cubism had become more conspicuous.\nHowever, this period also witnessed the artist\nventuring into bolder colors to render his genre\nscenes. Lines become transparent elements of\ncolor that define the figures. In this piece depicting\na Mexican market scene, Zalameda exhibits his\ntrademark cubist style. The subjects still resemble\nrepresentational figures, but visual likeness is not\nthe primary concern of Zalameda’s art. With his\nvividly colored composition, Zalameda unravels\na personal abstract style that has not entirely\nrelinquished the concept of representational\nimagery. The juxtaposition of bold colors transforms\nthe figures into abstract patterns. The figures\nconverge to generate a harmonious relationship\nbetween abstraction and color, as exemplified\nin this straightforward yet vibrant depiction of\na local marketplace.","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":"
Oscar Zalameda (1930 - 2010)
Market Scene in Mexico
signed (lower right)
ca. 1960
oil on canvas
40\" x 50\" (102 cm x 127 cm)
","alias":null,"hp":2400000,"bp":0.168,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":2400000,"userBid":5926,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":null,"hammer_price":2803200,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":20154,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/24/43/lot/66.jpg","isFeatured":1}]},"increment":[2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":65,"next":67,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
