Most significant in\nhis revered body of work are his genre paintings and portraits of\nwomen subjects. Aside from his iconic oeuvre, he also authored\nthe country’s first outline of art history and first essays on\npainting. As one of the first directors and pioneering instructors\nof the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts, he\nintroduced classical decorative art to his students. He won his\nfirst gold medal at the 1904 St. Louis International Exposition for\nhis groundbreaking work, Planting Rice.

\nDe la Rosa epitomized the artistic mastery of Juan Luna and his\ncontemporaries. These dignified nude portraits that feature a\nwoman in paradigmatic side poses perfectly encapsulates De\nla Rosa’s predilection for a realist-romanticist style in depicting\nthe human figure in its state of nature. Identified as belonging\nto the first period of De la Rosa’s artistic development, these\nportraits were painted in 1908 when he first embarked to\nEurope as a scholar. During that year, De la Rosa traveled to\nthe Occidental as a pensionado, becoming a private scholar\nof businessman and philanthropist Dr. Ariston Bautista Lin. As\nexhibited by the artist in these portraits, his art during this period\nwas characterized by darkened hues and meticulously accurate\nfigures influenced by his formal training in the arts. His technical\nvirtuosity was also emancipated, paving the way for a more\nrefined stylistic expression. Altogether, his works are celebrated\nand critically lauded both in the local and international art scene.","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":"
Fabian de la Rosa (1869 - 1937)
Nude I & II
signed, dated, and inscribed 1908,
Paris (lower right)
oil on canvas
30” x 20” (79 cm x 51 cm) each
","alias":null,"hp":2500000,"bp":0.168,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":2500000,"userBid":5926,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":null,"hammer_price":2920000,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":20390,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/25/44/lot/105.jpg","isFeatured":1}]},"increment":[2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":104,"next":106,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
