He was one of the young\nartists who paved the way to modern art after the\ncataclysmic consequences of the Second World War.\nInspired by Victorio Edades who introduced Modernism\nin painting in 1929, he emerged along with twelve\nother contemporaries who were zealous in uncovering\nnew ways of visual expression. They were collectively\ncalled the Thirteen Moderns. After the war, the group\nconsolidated themselves into the Neo-Realists who “were\nunited under the aegis of cubism,” according to art critic\nLeonidas Benesa.<br /><br />\nLegaspi stated that the human torso had always been\na unique element and subject in his paintings. In his\nconversation with Cid Reyes in 1984, he mentioned: “I\nthink that even if I were to paint a completely abstract\npainting, I shall always be abstracting the human figure.\nI can never get away from the figure.” In his paintings,\nthe human body, especially the male torso, evolved\nfrom Expressionist distortion to Cubist and disintegrated\nvisuals. The body is transformed into a faceted and\nintensely hued subject wherein the arms, the spine, or\nthe shoulders can be perceived as an abstraction.
