Dubbed as “The Dark Man of Philippine Art, his early works had\ndisturbing and peculiar themes. His art has since evolved to a noteworthy\nstyle depicting uncanny portraits, dauntlessly altering the compositions in\nhis canvas.
\nUsing fine brush strokes in acrylic and oil, Barrioquinto portrays\ndistinguishable faces in soft and restrained hues. His former style of\ndepicting his subjects with a bizarre keynote usually creeps into his recent\nworks, as evident in this particular piece. Enshrouded by a serene impression\nfilled with flora and birds with exuberant tones, he employs traditional\nJapanese patterns layered with ukiyo-e, Japanese woodblock prints from\nthe Edo period. Nothing much has changed in terms of his themes and\nsubject matter. What he did was to change the composition of his canvas\nby flooding the portrait with Japanese prints and designs, as explained by\nBarrioquinto. This resulted in a tattoo-like effect on his works","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":"
