Luz earned his Bachelor’s degree in Painting from the University of Santo\nTomas’ School of Fine Arts. Prior to this, Luz was already breaking ground as a\nstudent with his monumental win at the Art Association of The Philippines’ annual\nart competition. He then supplemented his expertise with further studies at the\nCalifornia College of Arts and Crafts, the Brooklyn Museum Art School, and\nthe Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. He was first noticed within the\nPhilippine art scene during his first solo exhibition at the Manila Hotel in 1951. He\nthen followed this up with a solo exhibition in Paris at Raymond Duncan Gallery in\n1954, and another solo show at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila in 1955. He\nhas since mounted exhibitions all over the world, solidifying his name as one of the\npillars of Philippine art.

\nLuz’s fascination with jugglers and other circus-themed imagery was inspired by\nhis experiences with local peryas or local fairs during his youth. In this particular\npiece, Luz manages to capture the energetic spirit of the performers through a\ndistinctly succinct and concise economy of means—a common theme that runs\nacross almost all of Luz’s major works. Luz manages to create a scene through only\na sparse assemblage of geometric elements such as circles, lines, triangles, and\nrectangles. Despite its sparseness, Luz’s mastery over his craft manages to create a\ntechnically and aesthetically engaging work of art.","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":"
Arturo Luz (1926 - 2021)
Red Trio Performing
signed (lower right) dated 2009
acrylic on canvas
36” x 54” (91 cm x 137 cm)
","alias":null,"hp":4400000,"bp":0.168,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":4400000,"userBid":7144,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":0,"hammer_price":5139200,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":20451,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/25/44/lot/160.jpg","isFeatured":1}]},"increment":[2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":159,"next":161,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
