Culibrina does not solely make allusions to traditional\ntechniques, but actively reinterpret and revamp them to suit the predilections\nof a contemporary world. His works traverse through the various inherent\ncontradictions of a globalized and advanced society, exploring the paradox\nbetween tradition and modernization, subjectivity and objectivity, and heritage\nand development.<br /><br />\nIn this piece, Culibrina seemingly draws inspiration from Fernando Amorsolo\nthrough his depiction of the female nude which is reminiscent of the\nmaster painter’s portrayal of nude figures. The artist also employs influences\nfrom Western pop culture evident in the logo of Supreme, an American\nskateboarding lifestyle brand, and juxtaposing them with traditional elements\nin our culture. What makes this piece exude a striking and imposing aura is the\nartist’s deep understanding that refined contradictions do not exist. Although\ndivergence of ideas and concepts are inevitable, we can all agree that one\ncannot exist without the other. Culibrina’s distinctive artistry and style are\ninspired by his personal experiences and observations as a citizen of a third\nworld country where globalization, modernization, and heritage and custom\nclash with each other.
