Barrioquinto’s visual spectacle contains a melange\nof components—from exotic animals to exquisite flora, each one rendered\nin Barrioquinto’s own brand of hyperrealism. Yet, his images, despite their\nvolume, are not jarringly misplaced. Instead, each piece contributes to the\notherworldly order that exists within his canvas.
\nBarrioquinto has also stated his fondness for traditional Japanese art, a\ntechnique he often uses throughout his works. His overlays are also inspired\nby the ukiyo-e, woodblock prints from the Edo period in Japan. There is a\nhint of darkness, seriousness, and gloom in the surreal and hyper-realistic\nfaces he depicts which show even in their calm facial expressions. In this\nwork, the subdued hues add to its overall provocativeness.
\nBarrioquinto’s enigmatic works that showcase his distinct style developed\nthrough the years of his artistic practice garnered him wide acclaim and\nfollowing both locally and abroad. In 2003, he was one of the recipients of\nthe Thirteen Artists Award from the Cultural Center of the Philippines.","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":"
