Joya is known as the one who spearheaded the advancement of abstract expressionism in the Philippines. Also a ceramicist and a printmaker, Joya produced mixed-media works and paintings with bright colors, establishing himself as an artist with a wide range of subjects, styles, and media. He took a bachelor’s degree in fine arts in the University of the Philippines (UP) where he earned the distinction of being its first magna cum laude in 1953. Later on, he pursued a graduate degree at the Cranbrook School of Art in Michigan on a Fulbright SmithMundt scholarship.<br /><br /> Joya was introduced to Fernando Amorsolo’s paintings in the university, initially schooled in the traditional tradition in which Amorsolo and Tolentino’s standards were adhered. His early works are representational paintings as he was influenced by the works of Vicente Manansala and Anita Magsaysay-Ho. In time, Joya became influenced gradually by the American abstraction and the emerging Philippine modernism trends. He became known for abstract expressionist works in which various techniques, from controlled drips and impasto strokes to transparent layering, are evident.<br /><br /> He was also part of a “Saturday Group” that met weekly to discuss art at the Taxa de Oro Restaurant in Manila and was involved in the Philippine Art Gallery founded in 1950 in which he was one of the “new wave” of artists producing abstract paintings.
