Born in 1939, a young Arcilla sought to pursue a formal arts education after gaining his high school diploma. He entered the University of the Philippines’s College of Fine Arts and earned his bachelor’s degree in fine arts in 1960. He was then given the opportunity to study abroad at the University of Hawaii and then at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His international sojourn garnered him a notable sense of prestige which landed him his first solo exhibit at the Hilton Hotel in 1971. He was then chosen to represent the Philippines at the International Art Exhibit Osaka and the Paris-Sud Biennale. <br /><br />Despite being attributed to the abstract and geometric minimalism of Paul Klee, Donald Judd, and, locally, Arturo Luz, Arcilla’s sculptures are distinct from this conceived canon in that they essentially challenge the conceptual foundations of these Modernist sculptors. In Arcilla’s works, gone is the incessant and fundamental need for aesthetic perfection via a perceived linearity. Instead, the artist’s fluid sculptures born out of a sense of spontaneity reflect the deconstructed and absurd actuality of reality. For Arcilla, there is no perfect world-of-forms to draw from, but an unrestrained, unpredictable, and essentially human reality.
